Affranchisement (word)

The Webster's Online Dictionary defines affranchisement as "the act of making free".〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Affranchisement )〕 According to TheFreeDictionary.com, "to affranchise" means "to release from servitude or an obligation".〔(【引用サイトリンク】 title=affranchise )〕 The work ''English Synonyms Discriminated'' explains that "affranchisement applies only to those who were parties to the compact dissolved, and deliverance only to those who were not parties". This means that the term is used in the following way: "the master...affranchises the slave".
==Evolution==
''A History of Ancient Greece'' explains that in the context of Ancient Greece, affranchisement came in many forms. A master choosing to free his slave would most likely only do it "at his death, specifying his desire in his will". In rare cases, slaves who were able to earn enough money through labour were able to buy their own freedom. They were known as ''choris oikointes''. Two 4th-century bankers, Pasion and Phormio, used to be slaves before they bought their freedom. A slave could also be sold fictitiously to a sanctuary, from where a god could enfranchise him. In very rare circumstances, the city could affranchise a slave. A notable example of this is when Athens liberated everyone who was present at the Battle of Arginusae in 406BC. Even once a slave was affranchised, there would still be ties between him (who became a metic) and his master (who became a prostatès).
